In early-twentieth-century England, the recorder was regarded as an exotic art instrument. Knowledge of its nature and repertoire was restricted to a few early music specialists, most notably, Arnold Dolmetsch and his family. In the 1930s, however, mainly due to the work of Edgar Hunt, the recorder became an instrument for everyone. This article will discuss the process of the recorder's entry into the school curriculum, which resulted in new types of recorders being developed that were inexpensive and easily available, culminating in the manufacture of the first plastic recorders in 1939. Unfortunately, these changes meant that for many, the value and status of the recorder was irredeemably lowered to that of a lowbrow instrument, a beginner's instrument, an ear-splitting bagatelle.
